Radiofax – weather forecast

Radiofax, alternativey called HF fax or WEFAX, is an analog facsimile transmission of weather maps over radio frequencies. To receive it a dedicated device, or a laptop and a portable SSB radio receiver can be used.

Single-sideband amplitude modulation (SSB) is used rather than frequency modulation (FM), what greatly increases the range and signal to noise ratio. SSB receiver must tune in to a frequency of 1.9 kHz lower than the nominal (as shown in brackets below).

Northern Europe region is covered by transmissions broadcasted by Northwood in the United Kingdom, Deutscher Wetterdienst (DDH) in Germany and Murmansk in Russia.
